Other Resources


There are many more foundations and resources for you to consider. Many of them serve regional areas; some are state-specific. Deadlines vary. Some have one meeting a year and consider applications only at that one time. Others meet several times a year, or have open applications. It is critical that with these smaller sources, just as with the larger foundations, you make sure your application meshes with their mission and funding areas. Some places to begin your search:


  • Yellow Pages – look under “Foundations.” In the Baltimore Yellow Pages,
    for example, the heading is “Foundations - Educational, Philanthropic, Research, etc.”

  • Health Conversion Foundations, e.g., the Blue Foundation in Florida or the BCBS Foundation of Massachusetts

  • Fraternal Organizations

  • Businesses and Corporations – and their foundations. If a business is headquartered in your area, they are really worth a look. If they are strictly local, they may or may not have monies to dole out, but they might have in-kind services they can provide.

  • State and local health departments – these agencies often have grants or are looking for subgrantees to carry out their work.
